Project history

The ex-US Tacoma class (British 'Colony') frigates Papua and Tobago were acquired by Egypt in 1950 as mercantile passenger vessels. They were taken over by the Egyptian Navy on 17 May 1953 for refitting as warships, but so far as known no work had been done when they were scuttled as blockships in the Suez Canal on 1 November 1956. They were later refloated, beached and abandoned.
