Project history

The first Chinese SSBN, built by the same yard as first SSNs. Equipped with twelve tubes for the JL-1 ballistic missile, first launched from Yuanzheng 200 trials boat in 1981. The first launch from Changzheng 406 took place in July 1988. Two more submarines were planned, but plans were cancelled in favour of development of new class, future Type 094.

Modernizations

2001: - 12 JL-1 SLBM, SQZ-3, SQW-3, SQG-2B sonars; + 12 Ji Lang-1A SLBM (12 JL-1A), H/SQ2-262B sonar suite

Naval service

No significant events.
