Project history

These small frigates were designed by the Brazilian Navy with the assistance of the German Marine Technik. First pair ordered on 15 February 1982 and the second on 1 January 1986. Originally it was planned to build twelve such ships and in 1986 the number was raised to sixteen units. Only four ships were completed, while the Brazilian Navy is looking for a new design of cheaper corvette. Júlio de Noronha and Frontin were transferred for completion to the Arsenal de Marinha upon the bankruptcy of Verolme in 1991. These ships proved somewhat top-heavy and the planned Vulcan Phalanx CIWS was not installed on the stern, instead a single SAM launcher was planned later.
