Project history

Plans to construct a fifth, improved unit of the Inhaúma class were announced during 1992, but funds to order the V34 were not made available until late 1994. Three additional units were at one time planned, but work and fitting out on V34 progressed very slowly because of funding problems. Work on the ship was scaled back dramatically between 2002 and 2004 due to lack of funds. The hull is a little longer than that of the Inhaúma class to accommodate more powerful diesel engines (for 20.5 knots on diesels alone) and provide more useful internal volume. The extra length allows installation of improved crew accommodations, additional rake and freeboard to the bow, and a longer helicopter deck. The ship uses, insofar as possible, the same systems that are being employed in the modernization of the Niterói class, including the Siconta combat data and direction system.
