Project history

Design based on Italian Intermarine Gaeta class. The bare hull (with superstructure shell and masting) of Huon was handed over in Italy 16.7.1995 and shipped via heavy lift vessel, arriving in Australia 1.9.1995 for fitting out; hulls of the second and later units were erected in Australia. Single-skin, monocoque foam-core GRP hull without ribs, frames, or stiffeners. Machinery on cradles suspended from bulkheads and overheads and nonintegral fuel tanks to reduce acoustic transmissions. Two rudders are fitted. The shrouded azimuthal thrusters are mounted two aft and one centerline forward just abaft the variable-depth sonar housing.
