The paddle minesweepers ran the risk of catching moored mines in their paddle wheels, and to meet this objection the Admiralty decided early in 1916 that a class of twin-screw vessels was needed. Another complaint against the paddlers was their poor performance in bad weather. Ailsa SB was asked to submit a design, which became the basis for 20 ships ordered in mid-1916. Like the sloops, mercantile practice was followed to a great extent, greatly simplifying construction. They were most successful, being capable of undertaking escort duties as well as minesweeping. They were fitted with 'Quixo' parent davits for handling sweep gear, and were the world's first fleet minesweepers.
None.
Blackmorevale was mined off Montrose 1 May 1918. Tedworth became a diving tender in August 1923; used for radar trials 1936 and sold for BU November 1946.
