Project history

46-gun 5th rate 18pdr frigates. John Henslow design, modified to incorporate Seppings' circular stern and 'small-timber' system of construction. All rerated as 42-gun in 1839. Nemesis, Statira, Jason, Druid and Medusa were ordered but never started.

Modernizations

1843, Penelope: was converted to paddle frigate with data as given in the table

1844, Daedalus: was cut down to 20-gun corvette: 6 x 1 - 204/12 8'' 52cwt shell SBML, 1 x 1 - 194/16 56pdr 87cwt SBML, 12 x 1 - 162/17 32pdr 50cwt SBML, complement 230.

1845, Amazon: was cut down to 26-gun corvette: 26 x 1 - 162/17 32pdr 50cwt SBML, complement 240.

1856, Fox: was converted to screw frigate with data as given in the table

1856, Penelope: reduced to 16 guns

1862, Penelope: reduced to 14 guns
