These vessels had the same hull construction as the Alert class. Gun mountings were positioned two forward, two amidships and two aft. The schooner rig was removed later, both ships retaining their three masts. The MGs were 11.43mm Maxims.
Ships had a protective deck of 25mm to 38mm steel extending over the machinery and boilers.

Phoenix capsized off Hong Kong on 18.9.1906 during typhoon, later she was raised and sold in January 1907. Algerine from 1915 was reduced to harbour service, she was sold for conversion to salvage vessel in April 1919 and wrecked in January 1924.
