Wooden 17-gun screw sloops designed by Lord John Hay (Cruizer) and by Walker (others) in 1850. First pair was originally ordered in 1847 as screw schooners (later gunvessels) Cracker and Hornet.
1875, Alert: was re-engined by 1 2-cyl HC (1240t, 312hp, 7.7kts) and strengthened for ice navigation.
Alert in 1875-1876 was employed for Arctic expedition.
