An unsuccessful attempt to adapt an RAF air-sea rescue design, the Seal type, these craft have proved unstable and suffer badly from vibration. Following problems with Kingfisher, the later craft were given a lighter mast and had no scuttles. Redpole was completed as RAF SAR craft Sea Otter and transferred to RN in 1984.
