Project history

First British iron turret ship, designed before Royal Sovereign, but her construction was delayed by a shortage of material and modifications to the armament. Originally she was to have six hand-turned turrets but these were reduced to four with the adoption of heavier guns. Turrets had 140mm walls reinforced with additional 127mm plates in way of gun ports. 111t gun turrets were hand-worked. An unarmoured CT was fitted abaft the foremast, and hinged 1.5m hign iron bulwarks were installed around the upper deck edge.

Ship protection

Full length waterline 114mm belt extended from the upper deck to 0.9m below waterline, wooden backing behind the belt was 457mm thick. At the extreme ends its thickness reduced to 89mm. The central battery between the main and upper decks was 21m long.

Modernizations

1867: hurricane deck was added over the two fwd turrets.

1880s: + 2 x 1 light guns, 6 x 1 MGs
