Project history

New 91-gun screw two-deckers. Surveyor's Department (John Edye) design, approved in 1849, modified final design approved in 1850. First two originally to have been 80-gun sailing two-deckers but were re-ordered as screw ships before they were laid down, three more were ordered to the same 80-gun design. In 1851-1853 all five ships (including Hero) were reclassified as 91-guns. Agamemnon became the first purpose-built screw ship-of-the-line in the RN. Wooden hull.
