Project history

Ordered in 1992 under builder's BSAC 160 design, as fact modified Spanish Principe de Asturias. Intended for disaster relief duties in peacetime, ASW operations and, when VSTOL attackers were based, for air attacks, amphibious assault operations (for what 5 CH-47 Chinook helicopters can be based on the flight deck and 20 vehicles can be accommodated in hangar). Maximal speed under diesels is 16kts. Ship has 174.6x27.5m flight deck with 12° ski-jump fwd. 5 landing spots and 2 elevators. Hangar (100x23.8m and 15x5.75m) is divided on two by fire bulkhead. 16t crane. There are a hospital with 12 beds and apartments for royal family. Plans included installation of Sea Giraffe radar and 9LVMk 4 CCS. Ship is fitted for installation of 1x8 VLS Sea Sparrow SAM (8 RIM-7M) with STIR 1.8 fire control radar, 4 Phalanx CIWSs, 2 30mm guns, SLQ-32(v)3 and SLQ-380 Aldebaran ECM suites, but that equipment was not acquired due to financial reasons.
