Built under Mexican order as Zacatecas as gunboat-troop transport, capable to carry 500 infantrymen and 30 horses, landed through two sideports. Designed armament consisted from 2 single 102mm/45 and 2 single 57mm guns, 2 single 25mm/60 AA MGs and 2 small MGs. Lead sister-ship Durango was transferred to the customer 14.7.1936 and served under Mexican flag till 2001. Incomplete Zacatecas, which building was suspended because of financial disagreements of builder and customer, came into hands of Nationalists at Cadiz and was completed by them as usual gunboat with strong armament. Fitting of enlargened superstructures and heavy armament has led to strong overload and decreased stability of ship to dangerous limits. Bunkrooms for soldiers and sideports were kept unchanged. Ship was officially requisitioned by Franco Government 30.5.1938, one day prior to departure to sea trails.

Since 1943 Calvo Sotelo was used as depot ship for S38 class MTBs, thus 120mm/45 guns were replaced by 2 old single 102mm/45. In 1952 ship was laid up into reserve at Cadiz.
