Project history

For landing operations in Morocco Spaniards bought in Great Britain 27 landing barges of X type. First batch (K1-10) was transferred at Gibraltar in 1921, remaining in Great Britain in 1924-1925.

Modernizations

None.

Naval service

Barges shared in well-known landing in bay Aluchemas 8.9.1925 when, in particular, for the first time in the world have been used for landing of tanks (Renault FT). After that they were used mainly as harbour crafts. 16 survived barges in 1936 got under the control of Republicans (it was possible to use on direct purpose no more than ten). Four of them (K12, 14-16) were used at landing at Mallorca in August, 1936. Thus K12, 14 and 16 were abandoned at evacuation of Republican forces from island and came into the hands of Nationalists, being used then coastal shipping on Balearic islands. K14 foundered in February, 1937 during a storm at Palma (Mallorca), but was salvaged and in 1940 commissioned again. K13 and 25 were used by Nationalists as patrols in strait of Gibraltar. During WWII K16 and 18 were converted to minelayers. Last barge of this type, K19, was stricken in 1962.
