Project history
Having a variant of Project 971 nuclear reactor, these submarines have significantly enhanced noise-reduction features. This class carries a new coating and is considered to be the quietest Russian nuclear-powered submarine. Quiet-operating speed is 20kts. Sonar suite includes bow spherical active/passive array, flank arrays and towed arrays. Rescue chamber can accommodate all the crew. Now lead-submarine of the class carries in the vertical tubes new supersonic long-range Oniks anti-ship missiles and Kalibr-PL family missiles, including 3M14 strategic land-attack cruise missiles and 3M54 anti-ship missiles with supersonic 2nd stage, anti-submarine 91R1 missile carrying ASW torpedo is tested. UGST multi-purpose torpedoes and 3M10 Granat subsonic strategic cruise missiles can be launched from torpedo tubes.
