Project history

This submarine was built on pr. 667A hull but earned twelve much longer-ranged missiles. The 'B' in the project number indicates a major armament change. The appearance of the new missile changed Soviet naval strategy because it made the defence of extensive wartime 'bastions', in which the submarines would operate, essential. The earlier pr. 667A would have begun a war either on patrol off the US coast or in protected harbours; the navy's strategic support mission would have been to help them break out to sea. This may have been the first Soviet ballistic-missile submarine with a 'Second Captain' combat data computer.
