The decision to provide rockets aboard the landing ship for close-in support would seem to be a major shift in Soviet doctrine. It is possible that the earlier craft were intended for unopposed landings, merely moving tanks more expeditiously than would be possible by land. Note, too, that the Project 770/771/773 was the first Soviet amphibious ship apparently designed for troop carrying. In 1992 all survived ships were reclassified from SDK (medium landing ship) to MDK (small landing ship).
