Project history

When she appeared, Ivan Rogov appeared to presage a Soviet shift towards amphibious intervention overseas. She can carry a full naval infantry battalion including ten tanks and thirty APCs and has three unique pr. 1206 craft to put them ashore as well as four Karnov Ka-25 helicopters. She had an integral shore bombardment capability in her 122mm automatic RL. Sometimes she was compared with the US LPH, although the small hangar in the superstructure was in no way comparable with the standard US hangar deck. Below that deck there was a tank deck forward, and a well deck (with a stern gate) aft. In this sense the concept matches that of the LHA, albeit on a much smaller scale. Unlike the US ship, however, this one beaches to discharge her vehicles through a bow door.
