Project history

Unlike earlier Soviet hydrofoils, this one had fully-submerged foils. They required advanced control systems, but should have confered very superior rough-water performance. In principle, MRK-5 would be comparable to the US Pegasus (PHM), although actual performance may have been very different. Propulsion was by propellers in pods on the after foils. Although displacement was less than half that of a Project 1234, Project 1240 had 4 Malakhit missiles and Osa SAM for self-defence.

Modernizations

None.

Naval service
