Project history

Project 1134B were redesigned versions of the version of Project 934 armed with short-range anti-ship missiles (Project 934A). Beyond the changes introduced in Project 1134A, they were powered by gas turbines and were enlarged to provide substantially better command control for associated ASW forces, such as aircraft. Reportedly the gas turbines were used partly because they were far quieter than the pressure-fired steam plant of the earlier ships. It was also possible that gas turbines were used partly because the main Soviet gas turbine plant was in southern Russia, near the building yard at Nikolayev on the Black Sea. These ships also added a short-range defensive missiles (Osa-M), VDS, and 76mm rather than 57mm guns. The bow sonar was unofficially described as low- rather than medium-frequency, and one can speculate that the VDS was particularly attractive for use in the Mediterranean, where most of these ships served.

Azov (Project 1134BF) was test ship for the Fort-M missile system, with Volna fire control radar in place of Grom.

In 1987 Nikolayev was taken in hand for major modernization under Project 11342, included replacing the Ka-25 helicopter by Ka-27, installing 4 quadruple canisters of Uran SSMs (16 missiles) instead of TTs, modernzation of Shtorm SAM to Shtorm-N (V-611M missiles), Osa-M SAM to Osa-MA2, replacing of URPK-3 Metel' ASuM canisters by URK-5 Rastrub-B SSM/ASuM canisters with 8 85RU or 85RUS missiles. Electronics would be also replaced: MR-123 Vympel radars by MR-123-02, MR-600 Voskhod by MR-700 Podberiozovik, MR-310A Angara-A by MR-750 Fregat-M2, MRP-15-16M Zaliv, Gurzuf-A and Gurzuf-B ECMs by MP-401S Start and MP-407 Start-2, MG-332 Titan-2 and MG-325 Vega sonars by Zvezda-M1 sonar suite, MVU-202 Koren'-1134B CCS by Lesorub-34 CCS, PK-2 decoy RLs by PK-2M. RBU-1000 ASWRLs would be removed. Max speed can be 32kts, endurance 6500nm, complement 430. Collapse of Soviet Union in 1990 and funds shortage prevented return of ship to service and Nikolayev was stricken in 1992. Vladivostok, being modernized that time under Project 11346, was stricken by the same reasons.
