These were project 1134 redesigned for ASW service while under construction. The first three were to have been further project 1134; the others were to have carried a shorter-range anti-ship missile battery (eight P-50). The shorter-range missile was replaced by an ASW missile, probably adapted from the anti-ship weapon, and a new bow sonar was fitted (the bow was more sharply raked to accommodate it). The surface-to-air missile was the more capable Shtorm, requiring a better 3-D radar (Grom) than the combination of project 1134. Shtorm, the only Soviet naval SAM with no land equivalent, had a substantial anti-ship capability, and would have been welcome in a ship otherwise restricted to ASW ordnance. These ships are designated BPK, large ASW ships.
