TsKB 5 began Project 206 in 1956 as a round-bilge successor to Project 183. This boat would have been somewhat smaller than an Project 205, about 160t, 33.6x6.74x3.75m, to make 45kts (cruise at 35kts, range 1000nm at this speed). Because this was slightly smaller than (but comparable to) Project 205, the decision was taken to a use the hull of the larger boat. The 4 533mm TT were radar-controlled by Onega-4 torpedo fire control system.
