Turret ships generally resembling the Prince Albert except in the number of turrets. There were three masts and originally a fore and aft rig was provided.
The side armour was complete, and at designed draught extended from 1.7m above wl to 1.5m below. There was no armour deck. The CT was small and located on the bridge with no tube to the deck.
