Project history

Former Austro-Hungarian Temes. 23.10.1914 she was mined at island Grabovchi on Danube; 27.6.1916 salvaged and 24.7.1917 commissioned again. 31.12.1918 ship was interned by Government of Yugoslavia at Novi Sad and commissioned by Yugoslavian Danube flotilia as Drina. Under the treaty of division of Austro-Hungarian fleet ship was transferred to Romania 15.4.1920 and renamed Ardeal.

Ship protection

Machinery had 40mm vertical and 25mm horizontal protection.

Modernizations

1929: - 2 x 1 - 120/33; + 2 x 1 - 120/50 Škoda-Bofors Mk4

(1937-1940): armour thickness was increased (70mm belt, 45mm deck, 75mm CT); - 2 x 1 - 90/42, 4 x 1 - 8.3/66; + 1 x 1 - 120/50 Škoda-Bofors Mk4, 2 x 1 - 37/80 SK C/30, 2 x 1 - 20/65 C/38, 1 x 2 - 13.2/76, complement was 129 men, speed decreased to 10kts.

7/1951: - 2 x 1 - 37/80, 2 x 1 - 20/65, 1 x 2 - 13.2/76; + 4 x 1 - 37/73 70K, 4 x 1 - 20/70 Mk 4.

Naval service

21.8.1941 Ardeal was damaged by Soviet by SB bombers at Vilkovo. 5.9.1944 she was captured by Soviet troops off Izmail on Danube and 30.10.1944 commissioned by Soviet Navy as Berdyansk. 3.7.1951 she was returned to Romania and BU 1959-1960.
