Project history

Ordered in 2007. The ships are built in sections with work being shared between Damen Schelde's shipyards in Vlissingen, Netherlands, and Galati, Romania. The ships are quite large by patrol standards and are heavier than the Karel Doorman-class frigates. The class is intended for low-threat environments and missions including maritime interdiction, humanitarian relief, and general patrol duties. Two 12m RIBs are carried; one can be launched and recovered via a stern ramp, and the second with portside davits. Primary sensors are housed in a single integrated mast module. A 10t cargo crane is fitted on the starboard side aft of the hangar, and additional room is provided to accommodate two 20ft equivalent (TEU) container modules in a compartment beneath the flight deck.
