Erimo was designed as a multipurpose minesweeper, minelayer and submarine chaser.

Naval service

Erimo was converted to an Explosive Ordnance Disposal tender (YAS69) (for mine clearance divers) in 1975-76, DCTs, DCRs and minesweeping gear were removed.
