Funding approved for first two in FY 98 and the third in FY 99; DD 113 was approved in FY 01, DD 114 in FY 02. Improved version of the Murasame class.
Propulsion plant duplicates that of the preceding Murasame class, with a consequent slight loss in maximum speed.
Fitted with OYQ-9 combat data system and equipped with Link 11 datalink capability. Taking advantage of the larger hull, the ships mount a larger gun than the Murasame class; they have a Mk 41 vertical missile launch group with twice as many cells but no Mk 48 launch system cells; this permits greater versatility in loadouts. The U.S. SQQ-28 (ORQ-1) helicopter-deployed sonobuoy datalink is fitted. May have two 12.7mm or 20mm guns and night-vision equipment to detect and deter infiltration craft.
