Project history

First unit authorized under FY 91 budget, second under FY 92 budget. Two were approved in FY 94, another pair in FY 95, and DD 107 in FY 96. DD108 and DD109 were approved under the FY 97 budget. DD108 was the final ship constructed by IHI (Ishikawajima-Harima Heavy Industries), Tokyo.

Both the Rolls-Royce and General Electric gas turbines are considerably down-rated from their normal maximum power. Although the plant could in theory generate a total of 106,500hp, and any turbine or combination of turbines can be connected to either shaft, the maximum output is limited to 60,000hp. Berthing for the crew is two-high, and there is a small gymnasium.

There are two VLS groups: a Mk 41 system group with 16 cells forward for vertical-launch ASROC missiles, and a shorter Mk 48 group amidships with 16 cells for Sea Sparrow SAMs. The vertical-launch ASROC missiles are rarely carried. The U.S. SQQ-28 (ORQ-1) helicopter-deployed sonobuoy datalink is fitted.

Modernizations

mid-2010s, all: - 1 x 16 Sea Sparrow SAM (VLS, 16 RIM-7); + 1 x 16 ESSM (Evolved Sea Sparrow) SAM (VLS, 16 RIM-162)

Naval service
