Project history

The Murasame class were designed principally for AAW and originally were designated DDAs. Two ships were built under the 1956 programme and the other under the 1957 programme. The 127mm guns mounted in this class were Mk 39s removed from the US Midway class aircraft carriers, the only ships then fitted with this gun; this 127mm/54 was to have been the successor to the ubiquitous 127mm/38. Actually, their rate of fire was disappointing, making them less than the ideal AA weapon. The handling rooms and magazines for these guns required additional space, thus making the Murasamies much more crowded ships than the Ayanamies. Weapons constitute 18% of the weight of the Murasame class units.

Naval service
