Project history

The Haruna class and the follow-on Shirane were the only destroyer-size ships in the world which carried three large ASW (HSS-2) helicopters. They had a strong ASW armament but were originally weak against an air and surface targets. The funnel was located somewhat off-centre towards the port side of the ship, thus permitting space for the third helicopter in the hangar. Fin stabilisers were installed at the bilge keel, and the 'bear trap' landing system was installed. The ships were used as flagships for escort flotillas.
