The Ayanami class were designed principally for ASW warfare and unofficially designated DDKs. Four ships were built under the 1955 programme, one under the 1957 and two under the 1958 programmes. The 76mm guns were US Mk 33s but the shields were uniquely Japanese. Later units of the class had a bulwark aft of the hull break. Reload torpedoes for the 533mm tubes were carried in racks on deck, which was standard practice in Japanese destroyers during the war. Ayanami was equipped with eight wash-down systems for removing radio-active fallout.

1976, Isonami, Shikinami: - 1 x 4 - 533 TT (lecture hall was mounted on its place).
All ships were later transferred to Fleet Training and Development Command as Special Use Auxiliaries (ASU) and Training Vessels (TV).
