The Akizuki class were built under the US Military Aid Programme and carried the 127mm/54 guns as in the Murasames. They featured a long forecastle hull and were designed as flotilla leaders. Weapon Alfa, an ASW mortar developed in the US, proved to be unsatisfactory.
