Project history

Authorized under the 1986 budget. Sharp sheer to bow improves seakeeping while keeping amidships freeboard low. Unusual in having a raised helicopter deck over the fantail and a second bridge above and abaft the main pilothouse. Fin stabilizers are fitted. A rescue diving crew is assigned to the ship.
