Project history

This is a modified Lupo design, about 10% larger, for better sea-keeping at the coast of about 2.5kts in calm water. Hangar space for two helicopters was bought by halving the number of Otomat missiles. The SAM system is Albatros with a mechanized reloader; the Sea Sparrow of the earlier Lupo has no means of power reloading, and whatever extra missiles were carried must be brought up from below by hand. Unlike the Lupos they have a VDS to supplement their hull sonar (DE-1164 rather than the DE-1160B of the Lupo) The VDS tow cable is to be lengthened from 600m to 900m, and a passive array streamed from the VDS 'fish', as in the USN SQR-18 system (Maestrale ran trials in 1989). Note that, unlike a Lupo, Maestrale carries a pair of stern tubes for large-calibre torpedoes (A-184) in addition to her lightweight weapons. To some extent these torpedoes must make up for the loss of the four Otomats.
