Escorts created on the basis of the project of Spica class torpedo boat. At the expense of some jumboizing and decrease of machinery power the fuel stowage was increased more than in 2.5 times; that has ensured endurance higher, than at destroyers. The artillery was shrank to two 100mm guns, but anti-submarine armament was increased to 6 DCTs, and DC stowage was considerably increased.
Though a designed speed in comparison with a prototype has decreased on 6kts, in the high sea Pegaso practically did not yield to Spica class torpedo boats and easily made 27kts.
In 1938, soon after commission, ships were re-rated from escort vessels to torpedo boats. Orione was rebuilt to fast corvette in 1953-1954 and Orsa in 1954-1955.
