Project history

Enlarged and improved Lampos, with a Proteus gas turbine in place of the Metrovick. These ships were built under the 1960 programme. The 1962 programme envisaged five Type 590 (Freccia class) MGB and three type 491 (Lampo class) MGB, of which only two Freccia were ordered; they were dropped officially from the programme in January 1972 when the Sparvieros were clearly in prospect. Planned Strale (ex-MC593) was never started by building.

They were designed to be convertible in one day.

Modernizations

1966, Saetta: + 1 x 5 Sea Killer Mk 1 SSM (4) (temporarily carried instead of 1 x 1 - 40/70 for trials presumably till mid-1970s)

Naval service

No significant events.
