Project history

Indian Project 15A. Funding for the first three was requested in 1998 as Project 15A; they have electronics of Western design origin and incorporate stealth design features. The final four units of the class are designated Project 15B. These ships will reportedly possess improved signature reduction features and are expected to carry the new Nirbhay 1000km range stealthy cruise missile. The first Project 15B destroyer is planned for delivery around 2018. Construction on the first three was delayed pending a redesign to incorporate both antiship and land-attack missile variants of the Brahmos missile. Sixteen VLS tubes for the Brahmos SSMs are carried forward of the bridge (aft of the gunmount); 16 SAM VLS tubes are installed forward (between the SSM tubes and the gunmount), and 32 additional SAM VLS tubes are carried aft. Helicopter deck is equipped with SAMAHE arresting system.
