Modified RN type 41 frigate, to serve also as presidential yacht, ordered in 1965 as Black Star, but cancelled after President Nkrumah's deposition in 1966. The British Government accepting responsibility for the hull, the ship was completed by the builders. Acquired by the RN in 1972 after six years lying idle in the Clyde and commissioned in 1973 as Mermaid. Another such frigate was projected, but never begun.
