Project history

Replacements tor 'Habicht' and 'Krake' classes. These smaller, more numerous boats reflected changes in Volksmarine mine warfare operational concepts. First boat, after prolonged trials, entered service as experimental ship V-31. First production boat laid down October 1967 and twenty-one were built by Peenewerft, Wolgast.

Modernizations

late 1980s, all: + 1 x 4 Strela-3M SAM (4 Strela-3M)

Naval service

: In the mid-1970s all were transferred to the Frontier Guard (retaining their sweeping gear), and renumbered in 'G' series, apart from Anklam, Bergen and Greifsioald which became training ships. Upon deletion Bergen became the fishery' protection vessel Warnemünde (with enlarged superstructure) and was retained in this role after reunification by the German Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries.
