Project history

Former Dutch submarines O25, O26 and O27, captured incomplete 14.5.1940 by German troops; 23.7.1940 they were renamed UD3-5. They were completed under German standards, CT and original artillery (1 single 88mm gun and 2 single 40mm MGs) were replaced by new; trainable TT mount, most likely, was never installed. UD3 and UD5 participated in operations, UD4 was used only as training boat and had no 88mm gun.

Modernizations

1942-1943, most: + FuMO 30 radar, FuMB 1 Metox ECM suite

1943-1944, most: - FuMB 1 Metox ECM suite; + FuMB 3 Bali, FuMB 6 Palau ECM suites

1944 - 1945, UD5 are rearmed with artillery consisted of 1 x 1 - 37/69 FlaK M/42, 2 x 2 - 20/65 C/38

1944-1945, some survived: - FuMO 30 radar; + FuMO 61 radar

Naval service

UD3 and UD4 were stricken in 1944-1945, both were in 1945 captured by Allies at Kiel and handed over on demolition. UD5 was returned to the Netherlands in 1945 and BU in December, 1960.
