Project history

Type 212A. Program development began in 1988. The contract for detailed design and construction was signed with a German Submarine Consortium in 1994 but did not take effect until the German FY95 budget was approved.

Use a nonmagnetic Type 1.3964 austenitic steel pressure hull, 6.80m in diameter forward, tapering via a conical section to 5.75m abaft the control room; i.e., the boats are single-hulled forward and double-hulled aft. There are two accommodation decks forward. The engineering plant is suspended in a raft for sound reduction, with individual equipment also using soundproof mountings. The air-independent propulsion (AIP) system employs a solid-polymer, metal-hydrid fuel-cell system. Fitted with Hawker sodium-sulfide batteries. Hydrazine gas generators are used to blow ballast tanks for emergency surfacing. There are no separate watertight compartments within the pressure hull to improve silencing.

The sonar suite incorporates six passive ranging transducers, flank arrays, a 0.3- to 12-kHz bow array, mine-avoidance set, echo sounder, 12-24 self-noise sensors, and a towed passive linear array (10-1,200 Hz), the first of its type in a German submarine and capable of providing frequency resolution to 0.01 Hz. The mine-avoidance sonar will operate at 30 kHz for detection and 70 kHz for classification. The torpedo tubes will use the water-ram ejection method, using two water rams: the torpedo tube arrangement is asymmetrical, with two rows of three tubes, four of which are to port of the centerline.
