In 1960 a total of seven US wartime LST type tank landing ships was purchased and in the summer of 1961 they arrived with German crews at Wilhelmshaven. Two were converted into the Type 726 maintenance ships Odin and Wodan. The planned conversion of two more to maintenance ships was dropped and both were sold for scrapping. Three units arrived at Wilhelmshaven with the pennants A1403-1405 were converted to Type 370 minelayers in 1962. During this conversion the bow ramp was removed and the bow doors welded up. Superstructure and interior equipment was adapted for the future use, six rails with launching ramps were fixed on the deck, the platform and lower deck also had minerails and two launching ramps with hatches. Bochum and Bottrop came into service in 1964. The conversion of Bamberg was 60% finished when this was stopped and the ship was sold for scrap.
