Project history

Motor minesweeping boats, or R-boats (Räumboote) were developed for shallow water areas, but actually became multi-purpose ships for operations in inshore waters; besides the basic purpose, they were used as patrol, anti-submarine and rescue ships. The prototype was created by F.Lürssen on the basis of F type minesweeping boat of WWI period.

All had composite hulls. Usage of minesweeping gear was supposed at heaving to 6 on the Beaufort scale.

Modernizations

None.

Naval service

R218 was sunk by British MTBs, R219 by British MTBs and aircraft. R221, R232, R237, R239, R250 and R261 were sunk by Allied aircraft. R222 was stricken by Soviet mine. R224, R227, R243, R256 and R260 were sunk by Soviet aircraft. Fate of R231 is unknown. R272, R273, R274, R275 and R276 were demolished by Soviet aircraft on the stocks. 6 boats from R234, 245, 254, 257, 258, 262, 265, 269, 270, 288 and 289 were transferred to East Germany by Soviets, they were commissioned by GDR police as R1 - 6 in May 1950. Later they were renumbered as 511 - 516, from 1955 as 811 - 816 and from 1956 as 7-61 - 7-66. All 6 were deleted in 1956 (7-66 was reclassified to TS Freundschaft). R266 was reverted from USA to West Germany in 1957 and commissioned by border guard as TS AT1.
