Project history
Ex-Italian corvettes of Ape class. Only 28 from 60 ordered ships were commissioned by Italian Navy before capitulation of Italy. In September, 1943 the big number of given class ships were been captured by German troops in combat-ready (Artemide, Antelope, Camoscio, Vespa) or incomplete condition. Besides, Persefone and Euterpe 9.9.1943 were scuttled by Italian crews, salvaged by Germans and repaired. All these ships were commissioned by Kriegsmarine as submarine chasers (U-Boot-Jager). 11 ships were completed by Germans before defeat of Germany and 8 were never completed. Really armament was varied from ship to ship. So, part of ship had no 37mm guns or DC racks and number of 20mm barrels varied from 7 to 14. UJ206 and UJ207 did not received electric motors for silent move.
Modernizations
AA armament varied from ship to ship.
Naval service
UJ201 was sunk 29.4.1944 by French leaders Le Terrible and Le Malin in Adriatic Sea. UJ202 and UJ208 were sunk 1.11.1944 by British escort destroyers Avon Vale and Wheatland off Zara. UJ205 was sunk 27.3.1945 at Shibenik by Allied aircraft. UJ2223 was sunk 16.8.1944 at Genoa by American aircraft. UJ6081 was sunk 15.8.1944 by American destroyer Somers E off Toulon. UJ6083 was sunk 17.8.1944 by American destroyer Endicott and British gunboats Aphis and Scarab W off Toulon. UJ6085 was sunk 4.9.1944 at Genoa by British aircraft.
Remaining ships were scuttled 25.4.1945: UJ206 at Venice, UJ2221, UJ2222, UJ2224, UJ6082 and UJ6084 at Genoa, UJ2226, UJ2227 and UJ2228 at Monfalcone.
