Project history Originally ordered by the USA as a part of a NATO order in France, where a whole series of this type was built.

Originally ordered by the USA as a part of a NATO order in France, where a whole series of this type was built. Belonging to the La Fougueux class she was commissioned in 1955 by the USN together with a sister ship and was given the pennant number P1618. Taken over by Germany in 1957, she was commissioned as Type 179 and was used as training boat for the underwater weapons school.

The second boat, P1616, was not taken over by the navy, but went to Ethiopia under MDAP.
