Though she was built on the Thames to a design by Edward Reed, Kronprinz was broadly similar to her French-built contemporary Friedrich Carl. The main points of difference were the British design's less prominent ram and two funnels. Ship was originally intended for thirty-two 72pdrs, only some of which would have been inside her central protected battery.
Main wrought iron belt had 254mm wooden back and was 124-114mm-thick under the battery, tapered to 114mm fore and 76mm aft. Battery had 121mm sides amidships, tapered to 114mm fore and aft and backed by 254mm teak layer, and 9mm roof. CT had 50mm sides and 30mm roof.
1881: + 6 x 5 - 37/27 RV L/30, 5 - 350 TT (2 bow, 2 beam, 1 stern)
Kronprinz was converted to machinery hulk in August 1901 and sold only in October, 1921.
