Project history

Built under 1927 (2 ships), 1928 (2), 1930(3), 1937(2) and 1938(1 ship) programs as alternative to cruisers for service in colonies where they should fulfil functions of command ships, demonstrate flag, etc. In this connection they were adapted for service in tropics. CT and gun mounts had splinter protection.

Bulding of La Pérouse was cancelled, and Beautemps-Beaupré, 84%-available, was scuttled at outfitting yard at approach of German troops 24.6.1940. On trials ships made from 17.2 (Dumont D`Urville) to 18.9 (Amiral Charner) kts.
