Project history

This last series of TBs for the 'défense mobile'  formed a particularly homogeneous class. They were based on the previous 37-metre type - most of the extra tonnage being attributable to the greater torpedo armament - but with a number of Normand modifications. Not only was the TT calibre increased but the two trainable tubes were mounted end-to-end on a single pivot aft. An increase in gun calibre was considered but rejected on the grounds of weight and the impossibility of matching contemporary destroyer armament, so this class retained the 37mm/20cal Hotchkiss 1885 model despite criticism of its low muzzle velocity.

All except 3 boats were fitted with the Normand-designed engines that were so successful in the preceding 278 and 279, and although they achieved less speed they were economical, giving 600nm at 18kts or 2000nm at 10kts. Nos 366, 368 and 369 had experimental machinery, 366's Lentz engine being so disappointing that her entry into service was delayed for 2 years while she was re-engined at the builder's expense; 368 and 369 had Delauncey-Belleville engines (with forced lubrication) of reduced power (1800ihp) and lower speed but increased economy.

Although generally satisfactory, this class was received into service with no great enthusiasm. Small TBs were considered obsolescent, and the concept of 'défense mobile' no longer seemed practical.

Modernizations

1915 - 1917, No 297, 301, 304, 306, 308, 313, 315, 316, 320 - 322, 324, 327, 352: were converted to minesweepers; - 1 x 2 - 450 TT; + mechanical minesweeping gear.

1915 - 1917, some boats were converted to patrols: - 1 x 2 - 450 TT; + 1 x 1 - 75/35 M1897
