Ordered in four groups, the first pair on 16.7.1877, the second pair on 18.11.1878, the next three on 10.2.1879 and the remaining two on 6.12.1880. They made between 18.59kts (47) and 19.84kts (55) on trials, and they were considered excellent boats with good seakeeping qualities. From 47 onwards the hull form was altered slightly and the last pair had one funnel instead of two.
